Write Your Divorce Vows

As difficult as a loss of relationship may appear, this is a new beginning for you, a new venture into the unknown; and how you approach this new venture is up to you.

One way to begin is to write your ‘Divorce Vows’. Don’t think logically here; instead go with your heart, and desire. What you write may seem far-fetched and unattainable right now - it may even go against who you believe you are - but often, once one declares an intent, a roadmap appears.

Here are 2 examples of Divorce Vows. Perhaps you fall somewhere in the middle of both. Using a) and b) examples, create and then sign your own unique declaration.

Divorce Vows (a)

I, John Doe, take you, Jane Roe, to be my ex-wife, to live apart as separate people from this day forward. I promise to preserve good memories, nurture our joint family, and recognize our pain and joy, for richer or poorer, in sickness and health. I promise to focus fully on my own new beginnings and relationships, throughout my present and future life, and through our family celebrations and hard times, as I remain faithful to my divorce vows by creating a healthy heart, mind, and soul as long as we both shall live.

Divorce Vows (b)

I, Jane Doe, take you, John Roe, to be my ex-husband, to reside fully in your life from this day forward as I dedicate my lifetime to reacting to your ongoing behaviour, the very same behaviour that destroyed our marriage. I promise to continue degrading our memories and ignoring our pain and joy, for richer or poorer, in sickness and health. I promise to focus fully on your life and our past lives together, throughout my present and future life and through our family celebrations and hard times, as I remain faithful to my divorce vows by generating misery and self-destructive behaviour as long as we both shall live.

Now, slowly and truthfully, fill in your vows:

I, ____________ take you, ___________ to be my ex-_____________

to _______________________________________________________

I promise to _______________________________________________

as I remain faithful to my divorce vows by _______________________

as long as we both shall live.
